In his work, Erwin Venema primarily explores homosexual subcultures. With a voyeuristic gaze, he captures these visually intriguing identities. His portraits function not only as documentation but also constitute a personal exploration of aspects of his own identity.
The work has a documentary character and is marked by carefully composed images. His training in documentary photography at the art academy, combined with his apprenticeship and assistantship with Erwin Olaf, have strongly influenced his visual language. His subjects are developed with the precision and aesthetics of advertising and studio photography.
